Campbell takes the lens of Impressionism and gives us a colorful view into the lifestyle of nineteenth-century Parisians. Citing novelist Honoré de Balzac, "Fashion is the expression of society . . . fashion is, all at once, a science, an art, a custom, a sentiment." She is a frequent contributor to Ornament. Jo Lauria is an independent curator and decorative arts historian. She requested to write a tribute to artist and jewelry designer Merry Renk because of the relationship she had forged with the jeweler during the past decade while working on an exhibition on 50 modernist jewelry. Lauria was privileged to get to know Renk on a personal level, and became inspired by the then-octogenarian with the twinkling eyes and ready smile, her colorful style of dress, and her indomitable spirit. Renk seemed to overcome life's challenges with resourcefulness and grace. Her attributes of inventiveness and courage endeared so many to this forward-thinking artist and pioneer who charted the aesthetic pathways for the next generation of studio jewelers. Renk left an indelible imprint on the field through her contributions in metalsmithing and watercolor production, and these contributions are recounted in this feature. additional c ontributors 12, 22, 38 Patrick R. Benesh-Liu, Ornament's Assistant Editor, presents an exposé on the jewelry of woodworker extraordinaire Gustav Reyes. In recognition of the achievements of craftspeople, he explores the various awards wearable artists have received at craft shows in 2012. He also contributes Ornament News, highlighting current events in jewelry and wearable fiber arts. 16 Robin Updike is an arts writer in Seattle, Washington, who is a frequent contributor to Ornament and in the last issue wrote the cover feature on Maggie Meister. Her interview with Washington jeweler Nancy Worden explores the artist's views on her work and on being a craftsperson. 9 ORNAMENT 36.2.2012 30, 62, 70, 74 Robert K. Liu, Ornament's Coeditor, examines that underappreciated element the clasp in jewelry. He also covers the Los Angeles Bead Society Bead Bazaar, as well as the glass jewelry of Joel Bloomberg. A final personal article on his mother Mary Man-Li Liu's qipao rounds out his contributions to this issue.
