25 ORNAMENT 35.5.2012 announcements & events CALIFORNIA BERKELEY ARTISANS host their Holiday Open Studios event from November 24 – 25, December 1 –2, 8 – 9, 15 – 16, and 22 – 24. This is the twenty- second year the artisans of Berkeley have held their Holiday Open Studios, with over one hundred handpicked artists and craftspeople who open their studios to the public. This self-guided tour presents a unique opportunity to meet the artists, to buy original and creative gifts, and to see working craft studios, giving viewers a glimpse into the creative process. Many studios are in the same building, or are clustered within walking distance. www.berkeleyartisans.com. HALF MOON BAY ART AND PUMPKIN FESTIVAL takes place from October 13 – 14. Two hundred fifty artists and craftspeople will present their work in jewelry, textiles, ceramics, glass, painting, sculpture, leather, wood, metal, and photography. The festival is located on Main street in Half Moon Bay, between Miramontes and Spruce streets. www.miramarevents.com. ILLINOIS THE RENEGADE CRAFT FAIR hosts its tenth annual Chicago show from September 8 – 9. Hundreds of craftspeople will offer their work in jewelry, clothing, book covers, illustrations, and sculptures, along with interactive workshops and music. The fair will take place on Division Street by Wicker Park. www.renegadecraft.com. REVERE ACADEMY announces its Mort Abelson Scholarship for 2013. Mort Abelson is credited with opening the jewelry industry to hundreds of contemporary designers, beginning in the 1980s. This contest, funded by donations by appreciative designers in order to honor their mentor, offers an opportunity for a working jewelry designer to further his or her studies with a world-class jewelry artist during the Revere's annual Masters Symposium. THE SCULPTURE OBJECTS & FUNCTIONAL ART FAIR holds its nineteenth annual Chicago show, from November 2 – 4 at the Navy Pier's Festival Hall. The SOFA expo features international galleries presenting a variety of craft objects, from jewelry to sculpture and furniture. Additionally, SOFA Chicago will host its traditional Hot Glass Roadshow in conjunction with the Corning Museum of Glass. Last year, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, a Chicago-based nonprofit, teamed up with The Art Fair Company to produce the Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art alongside SOFA Chicago 2011. This year, the Intuit Show will be integrated into SOFA, presenting leading dealers and galleries from around the country of self-taught art, outsider art, art brut, ethnographic art, nontraditional folk art, and visionary art. www.sofaexpo.com. Continued on page 70. THE FRANKLIN G. BURROUGHS - SIMEON B. CHAPIN ART MUSEUM OF MYRTLE BEACH features Kimono: Art, Fashion and Society, through September 23. An exhibition from the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, Kimono: Art, Fashion and Society presents an array of kimono and fashionable accoutrements made for young girls, unmarried women, brides, and married women. The garments are displayed alongside various woodblock prints and paintings reflecting a broad range of kimono fashions and time periods.
